Baby Bedding - Tips For A Safe Crib.
Preparing a nursery and buying baby bedding is an exciting time for any parent. A nursery is so colorful and laying your baby to sleep in his/hers little crib is one of life's little pleasures.
When shopping for your babies crib bedding, the one thing that must be on your mind is your baby's safety. There are many cribs available these days with varying prices. Fortunately, all new cribs that are sold in the U.S. are certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), it will be a safe crib for your baby.
If, however, you are buying a used or antique crib, then you need to check the crib's safety guidelines to make sure it meets current guidelines. The crib's slats should not be more than 2 3/8 inches apart; this will prevent your baby getting his head entangled between them.
You may well have heard of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), this is when a baby under one year of age dies suddenly during sleep. There are some simple safety steps you can take to protect your baby. First of all, always put your baby to sleep on his/her back and be sure to use a firm mattress. There should be no soft bedding in the crib, no pillows, stuffed toys, quilts, comforters. Nothing that is soft and no loose bedding. Your baby's crib should just have a bottom fitted sheet, this sheet should be tight, always be sure it's well tucked in, so there's no loose fabric that your baby can pull at.
There are two types of mattresses available for your babies crib, foam and innerspring. Foam mattresses are cheaper and lighter, which helps when changing the sheets. The higher the density of the foam mattress, the better quality it will be. Innerspring mattresses are more expensive than there foam counterparts but usually last longer. If shopping for an innerspring mattress, then you should look to get a mattress with a minimum of 150 coils inside.
The crib will be used by your baby until he/she is 2-3 years old. Be sure it's stable and be sure it meets the above regulations. Don't let you're baby sleep on a bed and don't let you're baby share your bed, it's just not safe for your baby.
We hope this guide is helpful to you. However, before buying any bedding for your baby, we do urge you to do some research on SIDS and learn the facts.
