Cribs - A Guide To Keeping Your Baby Safe.

Choosing from the many cribs available for your infant is probably one of the most important decisions you'll make as a new parent. Crib bedding is an absolute necessity for your infant, and you should be aware of all safety standards that the baby crib should meet, as well as the precautions you should take in setting up the baby crib sheets.

First of all, be aware of all the standards set for a crib, including the banning of lead-based paint on a crib in 1974. Regulations are also set for standard width between slats on a crib (to prevent possibility of your baby's head from becoming stuck between slats) and a minimum height for the crib side bar (to eliminate climbing and escape). The crib's mattress should also fit firmly within the crib so that there is no chance of your infant slipping between it and the crib wall.

You should be aware of safety procedures when using a crib as well. First of all, when your baby stands more than a couple of inches taller than the side rail of the crib, it is time to move your child from the crib to a regular bed, as this is no longer a safe environment. During the time that your baby sleeps in the crib, however, you should beware of the dangers of using baby crib bedding. Children, especially small infants, run the risk of becoming entangled and smothered by a crib blanket. Your infant is better off in one-piece sleepers than under a baby crib quilt and will stay just as warm.

Most importantly, you should be aware of your baby's positioning when placing him or her in the crib, as well as preparation of the bedding. Never place your child face down in a crib, as this is believed to be one of the biggest causes of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome, when a child in a crib suddenly and unexpectedly stops breathing). Always lay your child on his or her side or back inside the crib and, if you insist on using crib quilts, tuck them into the sides tightly so they don't shift and make sure they do not reach above mid-chest on your child.
