Are Feather Beds Right For You?

Before the invention of the commercial mattress, feather beds were probably the most common type of bed around. A feather bed was easily stuffed with feathers collected from the hen house or from geese and other farm animals. Stuffing two sheets sewn together was a simple way to provide cushioning for a good night's sleep.

Today, featherbeds are not as common but still exist. While the feathers do not provide the support of a spring mattress and should not be the main bedding for someone with back problems, featherbeds can be used in addition to the spring mattress. The feather mattress can be placed on top of a box spring or even a mattress to provide that extra softness that envelopes the sleeper when he or she climbs into bed.

Featherbeds are not always the best choice for someone who is allergic to feathers or down, either. While many featherbeds claim to be hypoallergenic, and the material used to stuff the feathers into may be so, severe allergies may still be able to pick up on the feathers and down stuffed inside the bed. At the same time, even if you are safe from the sneezes with the feathers sewn up inside another material, should the mattress tear or spring a leak, and down or feathers leak out, a runny nose could interrupt your comfortable sleep.

On the flip side, a featherbed is an excellent choice for pure comfort and relaxation, allowing the sleeper to pamper him- or herself in bed with the feathers that surround the body and enclose it in warmth and softness.

Featherbeds are not cheap, especially since precautions are usually taken to prevent allergic reactions to the feathers and down inside. Also, when choosing your featherbed, be sure the enclosing material is high quality and that the stitching is also appropriately tight to prevent leaking of feather content. After all, no one wants to clean up a bedroom full of feathers due to cheap quality.
