Murphy Beds – Designed To Save You Space!
Murphy beds were born out of need over a century ago. The original Murphy bed was a folding bed that met the necessity of entertaining company with limited space. William L. Murphy, the inventor, developed the first folding bed because he and his wife lived in a one-bedroom apartment where their standard bed took up most of the floor space. In order to entertain overnight guests, there was a need of a storable sleep unit.
Upon creation of the first folding bed, Murphy applied for a patent in 1900, and the Murphy Wall Bed Company was created. It is one of the oldest furniture companies operating within the United States today and continues to provide the highest quality merchandise to customers.
The most recognizable beds introduced by the company is the bed that pivots on a doorjamb, folding into a closet with ease. These were first marketed in 1918 by Murphy. Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s, these beds were extremely popular, and though this popularity didn’t dwindle, the steel shortage during World War II caused manufacturing limitations to replacement parts only, and production of beds was halted.
These beds again were an important furniture option in the 1950’s and 1960’s, when families couldn’t afford large houses and needed to optimize space. This continued into the 1980’s, with rising interest rates, oil embargos, and the recession making housing large enough to furnish with standard beds hard to afford. Murphy wall beds were the perfect solution to the limited space.
Today, Murphy wall beds are still available, with mattress support systems for twin, double, queen, or standard king mattresses. They are still the logical source for bedding purposes within studio or efficiency apartments or other areas where a bed is required to occupy a small space. Fire stations, dorms, and hotels are also popular locations utilizing hideaway and folding beds by Murphy.
Murphy wall beds are great solutions to providing a comfortable night’s sleep in tight quarters, and with the variety of sizes available, you can stow these beds almost anywhere.
