Are Water Bed Sheets Necessary For Your Water Bed?

While you can use standard sheets on a water bed, water bed sheets are also available. Old fashioned water beds are basically a bag in a box, meaning that pocketed bottom sheets are required in order to fit them onto the mattress. Also, waterbeds are hard to tuck the top sheet into, so you can purchase a sheet set that is connected at the bottom, holding the top sheet better in place. Other sheets will simply be sized larger for an easier time tucking the material into the wooden waterbed frame.

However, newer waterbeds are configured much like standard mattresses, with the mattress simply containing tubes of water covered by layers of foam. The mattress enclosure is then simply covered with a standard sheet of the appropriate size (note that, because of additional foam layers, your waterbed may require sheets labeled “deep”).

A water bed sheet can be made of any of the same fabrics as standard bed sheets; meaning that 100% cotton or a cotton/polyester blend may be used. Any type of bedding with feathers or down is not recommended, as both sheets and beds can leak, leaving you with a feather mess on your hands. If a duvet stuffed with feathers were to get wet from the waterbed, it could easily begin to smell and be very hard to dry.

Another material option for a water bed sheet is flannel, which is thermal and can help with cutting the coolness of the water in old fashioned waterbeds from seeping through the sheets into your skin and leaving you with a chill. If your waterbed is newer, though, this is not necessary, as the layers of foam inside the waterbed mattress should take care of the issue. Whatever you choose, make sure you read the washing directions on the sheets; you don’t want to be stuck with something that would be harmed if wet.
