Water Beds – Will You Sink Or Swim?

In the past, even though they were quite popular, water beds gained a less than savory reputation. Typically, a water bed contained a single water chamber that allowed the water to slosh around and be displaced in an extremely uneven fashion when an occupant would lay on it. These beds also had a tendency to be pierced or leak easily, causing the bedding to become soaked.

However, over the years, waterbeds have changed, and several advancements to the comfort level and reliability of waterbeds have been made. First of all, the typical waterbed today contains several tubes of water, which are made of a very thick plastic or vinyl to prevent leakage. These tubes are placed deep in the bed, making puncturing virtually impossible, and then covered with layers of plastic, foam, and other enhancements to create the soft, even surface of a standard bed’s mattress. All of these materials are then enclosed in a cover that looks like a regular mattress. This means regular bed sheets can also be used to cover the mattress, in any size (since waterbeds are still available in all standard mattress sizes).

These beds can be adjusted for comfort simply by filling the tubes with more or less water, or by adding or removing one or two tubes to make the bed more or less firm. The waterbed will then conform to your body shape and position better than a spring mattress. The water will be slightly displaced, but with a more evenly distributed water filling, you won’t have the “seasick” effect that old-fashioned waterbeds had.

There are only two down sides to the modern waterbed. First of all, the amount of water used to fill these beds makes them extremely heavy, and the mattress cannot usually be moved without dismantling it and carrying it to the new location piece by piece. Second, if you don’t like the firmness of the mattress, you again have to completely disassemble it to get to the water tubes within. However, by comparison to a standard mattress or an old style waterbed, it is typically worth the hassle for the comfort and versatility these beds provide.
